While the cost of the mold and tooling is usually paid for up front by the customer, the molding vendor does have a responsibility to maintain and keep the customer’s tooling in reasonable condition, determined by the quantity of parts being produced and expected life of the tooling. In most states, if a customer does not finish paying monies due, the molder immediately assumes a mechanic’s lien on the mold and may sell it to recover payment. QUESTIONS 1. Which category of plastics tends to shrink more in the direction of flow rather than across the direction of flow?

The cavity image is another term for the cavity set. Figure 31 shows a cavity image that can produce a part. If the cavity set is machined directly into the A or B plate, as shown in Figure 3-2, it is said to be cut-in-the-solid. This does not lend itself well to corrections, repairs, or engineering changes, but is an inexpensive way of producing a cavity image and can be cost-effective for short runs, or when quality or dimensional control is not critical. Note in Figure 3-2 that there is a raised wall around the cavity image.

Due to constant expansion and contraction of the various mold components during molding, ejectors can not be made to stay perfectly flush with the surface of the molded part. Therefore, they leave a pad of excessive plastic (protrusion) if the pins are too short, and they leave an impression in the plastic part if they are too long. This evidence of existence is called a witness mark, as shown in Figure 2-7. If the pins are long, thus creating an impression in the part, the molded part will tend to stay on the ejector pins and may not fall out of the mold when ejected.
