32 Tocqueville on America after 1840 Tocqueville’s profound concern about the impact of slavery continued long after his retirement from active politics in 1851. Like some of his American correspondents, Tocqueville was worried about the “terrible antagonism between freedom and slavery”130 that seemed only to increase in force over time. This concern was made abundantly clear when, in 1856, Tocqueville published an open letter in The Liberty Bell. ”131 Slavery, he went on, retarded America’s progress, gave support to her detractors, and threatened the future of the Union.

The main body of his materials will be found in the Federalist, and in Story’s Commentaries on the Constitution; sic vos non vobis. ”72 Other critics went so far as to challenge even some of the key concepts of Tocqueville’s account of American democracy. In a letter of February 1, 1841 to Guillaume-Tell Poussin (author of an important book on the government and institutions of the United States in which he sought to amend some of Tocqueville’s observations),73 Jared Sparks, a close friend of Tocqueville, pointed out his disagreement with the latter’s theory of the tyranny of the majority in America.

Some letters focus on professional matters such as the publication of the newspaper Le Commerce, the sessions of the French Academy, and the Chamber of Deputies whose member Tocqueville was. A regular topic of inquiry, especially in the exchanges with Theodore Sedgwick, was the economic stability of America. Tocqueville owned shares in a few American railway companies and was frequently worried about them. Tocqueville’s letters from the 1850s also reaffirmed his interest in American politics as the political developments in the United States led to an intensification of the struggle between the defenders and opponents of slavery.
