OPERATIONS SINCE 1990 The demands of the Cold War and the threat of a Warsaw Pact attack were the main focus of military planning for decades. To that end the Army was organized, equipped and trained primarily for its role in NATO, although this considerable military effort, especially to BAOR, was never classified as ‘operational’. The Army was constantly distracted from this focus by actual operations elsewhere, such as Northern Ireland and long-standing commitments to the United Nations.

The chaplains, known as ‘padres’, are predominantly Christian but the Department also includes Jewish chaplains. In recent times the Army has also made provision for other faiths, although their inclusion in the RAChD is not formal. Royal Logistic Corps On its formation in 1992 the RLC represented a major organizational change by bringing together the Army’s main transport and supply organizations. It was formed from an amalgamation of the Royal Corps of Transport, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Pioneer Corps, Army Catering Corps, and the postal and courier elements of the RE (who retain their RE cap badge).

The four AGC branches are: Provost Branch – comprising the Royal Military Police (RMP), Military Provost Staff (MPS) and Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS). Army 2020 creates the 1st Military Police Bde, a hybrid Regular and Reserve formation which will contain the three RMP regiments (1, 3 & 4), the Special Investigations Branch Regt, a new Special Operations Unit, and the Military Corrective Training Centre. Army Legal Services (ALS) – incorporating the Army Legal Corps. Staff and Personnel Services (SPS) – comprising the Royal Army Pay Corps (RAPC), and the clerks of the RAOC and all other regiments and corps.
