We believe that enterprise architecture has two guises. The first is the detailed companion to the ISSP process. The other is a living, breathing entity adapting to its environment in a reasoned way. Some organizations’ experience with ISSPs has been less than encouraging. They can be expensive to produce and complicated to implement, and it can be difficult to measure their effectiveness. In some instances, they end up as expensive bookends. On the other hand, the enterprise architecture is never complete and is embodied within every major IT decision made.

Both the ISSP and enterprise architecture provide guidelines for systems to be implemented, technologies to be considered, and information to be gained. The ISSP, however, considers all of these aspects at a point in time and at a higher (business) level. We believe that enterprise architecture has two guises.
