Elements of the Left within the advanced industrial states recognized this, and it is this recognition that drove the classic Marxist alliance between socialist groups in Europe and North America and national liberation groups in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Nevertheless, this tradition of metropolitan radicalism did not always admit to its paternalist relationship with the national liberation struggle.
