The ecology movement was not born out of a photo. It was galvanized into life in response to enormous problems: overpopulation, pollution, and resource scarcity. All were problems of finitude, limitednessthat circular self-containedness so vivid in the photo- Page 22 graph. The population could not expand forever without encountering the natural ceiling of the biosphere's carrying capacity. And pollution could not continue to be dumped indefinitely into the atmosphere and waters, without degrading their ability to support life.

They don't reveal why or where an idea is picked up from its hiding place in a scientific treatise or a forgotten philosophical controversy, and catapulted into public awareness. For this, one must turn to certain widely read or widely influential writings, seminal works that present the idea in a new, appealing, and relevant way, often in response to a particular public crisis. So this book looks in two directions. It looks at the world of nature, through the eyes of ecologists and scientists who have, in a sense, newly minted it for us in a surprising and appealing way.
