The following day we leave northern Canada’s largest city and ride for Alaska, crouching low under leaden rain clouds threatening us with a downpour that never comes. The temperature plummets, the road deteriorates, and we have to repeatedly slow for potholes. We pass scrappy working towns, crumbling gas stations, and boarded-up motels that are being reclaimed by the wilderness.
There’s not much we can do, and he soldiers on, but the shine is off the day. We find a hotel, set a plate of steaming food in front of him, and send him into pharmaceutically induced sleep.
