In contrast to most of Europe, timothy (Phleum pratense) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) are still the most important grass species for leys in Norway.
From each of 550 habitats 5 to 10 plants were taken adding up to a total of 8500 plants. The species included were primarily perennial ryegrass, and, to a lesser extent, Kentucky bluegrass, orchardgrass, and meadow fescue. The collected ecotypes were planted in a spaced planted nursery for evaluation. l. which is characterized by an exceptionally long snow cover. The following characters were assessed: Spring vigour, vigour at cutting time, regrowth, rust resistance, winter hardiness, persistency.
